SUPER GRAIN MIX

ree

3 cups of dry grain mix, 5 minutes to combine, 30-minute cook time

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup long-grain brown rice

  • 1 cup barley (best for pitta & kapha, option to substitute farro for vata)

  • 1 cup quinoa

  • Ghee for cooking

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Lemon/ lime juice for topping

DIRECTIONS

  1. Combine all uncooked grains in a mixing bowl and store in an airtight container.

  2. To cook: Measure 1 cup of mixture of mixture and soak in water with a splash of vinegar (or spritz of lemon juice) for 1-2 hours.

  3. Drain and rinse the grains.

  4. Add 2 cups water, grains, 1 tbsp ghee and 1 tsp of salt to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, cover, reduce to a simmer and cook until tender and water has been absorbed (about 30 minutes).

  5. Top with a spritz of lemon or lime juice. Adjust salt & pepper to taste. Enjoy!

Notes

  • This is a well-balanced nourishing grain mix for all doshas.

  • If you forgot to soak before making - that is okay, just cook it for longer. Note that soaking also helps in digestion, but we all get in a hurry every now and again - it's okay for now, just cook it longer.

  • Option to add 1/2 cup dried millet or buckwheat groats to this mix if kapha.

  • I have also made this with white basmati rice - this is okay, just know that white basmati rice cooks faster than the other grains in the mix so it might be a little over-cooked when you cook it all together.
